We help people rise from poverty, exit homelessness, and be healthy.

In 1979, a group of innovators at Columbia University came together to help poor people caught up in New York City’s evolving homelessness crisis. Their purpose was simple: to engage faculty and graduate students with individuals who were largely invisible in the city.

Today, as a completely independent non-profit since 1993, our inspiration remains the same, and we excel at developing affordable housing and providing integrated programs that link housing, health and social services for New York’s homeless and most vulnerable people.

Building Brighter Futures Together

Our pioneering housing programs have laid the groundwork for the development of evidence-based supportive housing services nationwide. We have helped thousands of people move off the streets and out of shelters into housing while receiving needed supportive services.

Our wellness programs help people with complex medical and mental health conditions access care and improve their quality of life. Our Janian Medical Care brings integrated psychiatric and primary medical care to thousands of people, whether at a park bench, soup kitchens or housing programs.

Our employment services and one-stop benefit centers help families and individuals make strides to move beyond poverty. Every year thousands of people are connected to employment, support and benefits to achieve and maintain financial stability.

Our training teams are at the forefront of the health, human services, and judicial fields, helping professionals develop a deeper understanding of those they serve while providing a more multifaceted professional toolbox.

Today we care, uplift, connect and serve 50,000 individuals in New York and nationally.
