Community Based Single Stops

Community Based Single Stops are walk-in service centers, with two locations in Harlem and two in the Bronx.  Staffs at these centers help clients by bridging the information gap separating low-income families from life-changing public benefits, tax credits and other essential services that remain untapped and inaccessible.

Single_Stop_Community_BenefitsWith the high cost of living in New York City, many low-income individuals and families, senior citizens and veterans struggle to make ends meet. For many of them, obtaining information is key to accessing resources that can enable them to move out of poverty and live a better life.

CUCS operates Single Stop Centers in Central Harlem, East Harlem, the Bronx and on Rikers Island. The service is available to any individual or family in need of assistance. Single Stop is funded by the Robin Hood Foundation and Single Stop USA and provides free, confidential assistance in the following areas:

  • Benefits Assistance: assistance with screening for and completing public benefit applications; including onsite Food Stamp and Medicaid enrollment, SSI/SSD, Unemployment, SCRIE/DRIE, Medicare Savings Program and many more
  • Legal Assistance: legal counseling covering a wide range of civil problems including but not limited to housing, immigration, employment, and family
  • Financial Counseling: assistance with debt reduction, savings for the future, budgeting, identity theft, and credit education
  • Tax Preparation: referrals to IRS certified free tax preparation locations
  • Diaper assistance: free one time supply of diapers for children under the age of 4
