Despite the efforts of the city’s community organizations and religious groups, many homeless people remain terribly isolated. With that understanding, CUCS created its Housing Placement Center to facilitate contact with those who would otherwise remain without the help they need. Started in 1983 as one of the first service programs for mentally ill, homeless adults living in public spaces, CUCS’ Housing Placement Center targets individuals who live in parks and other public spaces as well as those who have remained in municipal shelters for years on end.
CUCS' Harlem Street to Home Program is integrated into CUCS' Housing Placement Center, located in West Harlem, which provides an entry into housing for people who might otherwise remain living on the streets. Together, these two programs serve hundreds of people every year by providing meals, showers, laundry facilities, medical and psychiatric services, counseling, benefits assistance and housing placement.
