Community Based Single Stops

With the high cost of living in New York City, many low-income individuals and families struggle to make ends meet. For many of them, obtaining information is key to accessing resources that can enable them to move out of poverty and live a better life.

To provide a single point of information, CUCS operates Single Stopcommunity_based_single_stop_p40 Centers in Central Harlem, East Harlem, the Bronx and on Rikers Island. The service is available to any individual or family in need of assistance. Single Stop is funded by the Robin Hood Foundation and Single Stop USA and provides free, confidential assistance in the following areas:

  • Benefits Assistance
  • Legal Assistance
  • Financial Counseling
  • Tax Preparation
  • Short-term Counseling and Referral Services

The Issues

20% of New Yorkers live in poverty.

1,600,574 people live below the poverty line in New York City.

An additional 19% of New Yorkers are low-income.

Over 185,000 children (age 0-5) are raised in a family living below the poverty line.

Our Results

CUCS’ Single Stops provided entitlements counseling to over 1,800 clients last year.

The Central Harlem Single Stop secured $3,909 per month ($46,908 per year) in ongoing benefits and $3,388.75 in one time assistance for clients.
