CUCS is pleased to present the George Brager Memorial Scholarship Program. The Brager Scholarship Program has been established to enable disadvantaged youth to attend college with the supports necessary to achieve academic success and transition to independence. To ensure that the scholarships are as effective as possible, the program has become a Dollars for Scholars Program of Scholarship America.
George Brager had a lifelong commitment to educating and empowering youth. Dr. Brager, a former dean of the Columbia University School of Social Work, was a founding director of Mobilization for Youth (MFY), a pioneering organization that helped launch groundbreaking initiatives which served as prototypes for War on Poverty programs. CUCS had the good fortune to have Dr. Brager as its founding chair, and established the Brager Scholarship Program as a lasting memorial to his achievements. The program is made possible through the generous support of his family and friends, CUCS staff, and individual donors.
This George Brager Memorial Scholarship Program is designed for students who have demonstrated ability in school and interest in advanced education but who might not have the resources and necessary support to go to and remain in the best possible college. To be considered for this scholarship, students must complete an application demonstrating that all eligibility requirements are met.
Program Components:
To address a full range of obstacles, CUCS’ program offers participants the following benefits:
College Preparation:
- PSAT and SAT preparation
- career development workshops
- tutoring and homework help
- individual academic counseling and financial aid opportunities
Financial Award: In addition to assisting recipients in obtaining scholarships and financial aid, CUCS provides cash grants to each recipient to help meet their expenses throughout college. A $2,500 annual grant is awarded to each recipient upon college acceptance and throughout college (up to a maximum of $10,000).
Learn & Earn: CUCS provides recipients with paid summer internships to advance their skills, offer networking opportunities and provide additional income to meet recipients’ needs. CUCS arranges internships within the organization or with a range of corporate and non-profit partners.
Support Services: A CUCS Case Manager works in partnership with each recipient to develop and implement an education/career-focused service plan and provides additional services and supports as needed.
