Hurricane Sandy Aftermath

Although we all have struggles in the aftermath of hurricane Sandy, some have been much harder hit than others. At CUCS, in addition to maintaining our many services for New Yorkers throughout the city, we are providing extra assistance to over 1,000 people who are formerly homeless or living on very low incomes to meet the many challenges of living without electricity. Being without lights or refrigeration, having no hot water, and unable to cook or even to make a cup of coffee are particularly tough conditions for those living with mental illness, serious health conditions and limited incomes.

CUCS is providing extra resources and staffing throughout this emergency to ensure the well-being of those most affected and most vulnerable. Purchasing and delivering hot food, flashlights, blankets, lanterns, and providing extra comforts for the past week added significant expenses to our already tight budget. Fortunately, this week is much brighter, as electric power is back at all our service sites. Your generosity is particularly needed at this time to help us pay for these unexpected costs. A donation to CUCS would be most appreciated and meaningful to the people we serve.

Lenniger Residences Target LEED Gold Certification

Lenniger_corner

Opened in December 2011, the Lenniger Residences is a 92-unit, 2-building supportive housing development in the East Tremont Section of the Bronx.  It provides homes for low income and formerly homeless individuals and families.

One of CUCS principal design priorities was to build environmentally friendly and sustainable green buildings. Lenniger tenants enjoy aesthetically pleasing apartment design, landscaping and many amenities including a computer room with internet access, a fitness room, a multipurpose room, and laundry facilities.  The project received the Queens and Bronx Builders Association 2011 Building Award for Excellence in Design and Construction.

With the review process almost complete, the Lenniger Residences are poised to achieve LEED Gold Certification.  Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an internationally recognized mark of excellence that provides developers with a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.  In addition to LEED certification, the Lenniger Residences expect to receive ENERGY STAR Certification as well.  This certification is administered through NYSERDA’s Multifamily Performance Program and focuses primarily on the buildings’ energy use.

In order to achieve these high standards, the Lenniger Residences incorporated the following green features:

  • A Combination of High Albedo and Green Roofs
  • High Efficiency Boilers
  • Enhanced Insulation
  • Energy Efficient Lighting
  • Energy Star Appliances
  • Water-Conserving Plumbing Fixtures
  • Continuous Fresh Air Circulation
  • Building Materials with Recycled Content
  • Low VOC Paint
  • Permeable Paving Systems
  • Non-Invasive and Drought Resistant Plants
  • Bike Storage Areas

CUCS is thrilled to announce a training initiative for staff of human service organizations.  While human service organizations are charged with the difficult task of helping individuals and families with multiple challenges to improve their lives, many staff at these agencies have trouble finding trainings that help them develop the practical skills and knowledge they need. CUCS, a long time training and service provider, is launching this new training initiative to address this need. Trainings are targeted to front line staff and their supervisors, priced on a per-person basis, and include topics such as developing counseling skills, preventing and responding to crises, understanding mental illness, managing stress, and others of practical, day to day benefit to human services staff.
