ABOUT CUCS
CUCS is a pioneer in creating comprehensive, effective housing and service programs for homeless and low-income people, particularly those suffering from serious mental illness, HIV/AIDS, and other disabling conditions. Since its inception at Columbia University in 1979, CUCS has also worked to improve public policy affecting the homeless and dispossessed. Thousands of formerly homeless people have found independence and rebuilt their lives with the help of CUCS' programs and services.
CUCS currently sponsors twelve service sites throughout Manhattan and operates a training and technical assistance program nationally. Our strong track record of innovation with positive results has led to many of our program models being replicated in cities across the nation. Our efforts are focused on the development of progressive, cost-effective models for addressing homelessness.
Our sites in Manhattan include seven supportive housing facilities, two transitional living communities, an outreach program and drop-in center, a job training and employment program, and a training, consultation, and housing information services department. More than 1,300 individuals currently living in permanent supportive housing residences located throughout Manhattan use CUCS supportive services. These services include on-site mental health care, primary health care, case management, crisis intervention, job training and job placement.
CUCS has an annual operating budget of approximately $13 million
dollars and a staff of over two hundred fifty professionals and para-professionals. In 1994, CUCS left Columbia University and independently incorporated as a tax-exempt nonprofit organization with a new board of directors and fully autonomous operating systems. CUCS has more than doubled in size since then and has plans for further expansion into several new program areas.
CUCS partners with two not-for-profit housing development organizations-Broadway Housing Communities (BHC) and Common Ground Community (CGC)-on its supportive housing
projects. BHC and CGC rehabilitate and manage the housing while CUCS provides the on-site supportive services.
